Do I Need a Visa for Brazil?

Many nationalities can enter Brazil for tourism without a visa, but this is not the same as having a visa. Tourist entry (often called "visa-free" or "visa waiver") typically allows stays of 90 days within a 180-day period.

However, tourist entry does not allow you to:

• Work (remotely or locally)
• Study at a Brazilian institution
• Stay longer than the allowed period
• Access certain government services

If you plan to do any of these things, you'll need an actual visa.

Citizens of the following countries can typically enter Brazil for tourism without a visa:

Americas: United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and most South American countries

Europe: All EU member states, UK, Switzerland, Norway

Asia-Pacific: Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand

You need a proper Brazilian visa if you plan to:

Study: Enrolling in any course longer than 90 days at a Brazilian educational institution requires a Student Visa (VITEM IV).

Work Remotely: Even if your employer is outside Brazil, the Digital Nomad Visa (VITEM XIV) is required if you want to stay long-term while working.

Work Locally: Employment with a Brazilian company requires a work visa sponsored by your employer.

Stay Long-Term: Any stay exceeding the tourist entry allowance requires appropriate visa authorization.

Some people try to extend their stay by leaving Brazil and re-entering to reset their tourist allowance. This strategy is risky:

• Brazilian immigration officers may deny entry if they suspect you're circumventing visa requirements
• Repeated entries can result in shorter allowed stays or outright bans
• You have no legal protection if something goes wrong
